Nominalization and information density

El fet que, abstract nouns, clause packaging, mood choice, and clear complex syntax.

Nominalization turns an event or judgment into a discourse object

Instead of presenting every idea as a separate finite clause, advanced Catalan can package information as a noun phrase: el fet que..., la possibilitat que..., la manca de.... This supports dense argumentation, reference back to earlier claims, and precise topic-comment structure. Use it selectively; too many abstract nouns make prose heavy.

Three productive patterns

PatternFunctionExample
el fet que + clausetreat a proposition as an established/relevant factEl fet que visqui lluny no és cap problema.
la idea / possibilitat / necessitat que + clauseevaluate a possible or desired propositionLa possibilitat que s’ajorni preocupa el sector.
noun + de + infinitive/nounpackage an action without a new subjectLa decisió de tancar va sorprendre tothom.
allò que / el que + clauserefer to content less formallyEl que proposes requereix temps.

Indicative or subjunctive after the nominal expression?

El fet que can take indicative when the writer simply asserts the fact: El fet que viu lluny explica els retards. Subjunctive is common when the fact is presupposed, evaluated, made thematic, or not the new assertion: El fet que visqui lluny no justifica els retards. Nouns of possibility, desire, fear, need, or rejection normally select subjunctive: la possibilitat que plogui; la necessitat que canviï.

Turning verbs and adjectives into nouns

Less dense clauseNominalized alternativeEffect
L’empresa va créixer ràpidament.El ràpid creixement de l’empresa...makes growth the topic
No hi ha prou recursos.La manca de recursos...names an absence
Van aplicar la norma.L’aplicació de la norma...focuses the process/result
És difícil accedir-hi.La dificultat d’accés...compresses an evaluation
Cal revisar el sistema.La necessitat de revisar el sistema...turns necessity into a claim object

Preserve who does what. la revisió de l’informe per part del comitè is explicit but heavy; often el comitè va revisar l’informe is clearer.

Information structure in complex sentences

A nominalized phrase can anchor a paragraph: Aquesta manca de coordinació explica, en part, els resultats. Use demonstratives—aquest fet, aquesta decisió, aquesta tendència—to refer back precisely, but ensure the antecedent is unmistakable.
