Past tenses

Vaig parlar, parlí, he parlat, time frames, clitic position, and the vaig trap.

Everyday Catalan builds the completed past with anar + infinitive

The normal spoken past for a completed event is the passat perifràstic: a special past auxiliary derived from anar plus an infinitive. It means “I spoke / I did speak”, not “I went to speak”. The synthetic simple past carries the same completed meaning but belongs mainly to literature, formal narrative, and some Valencian and Balearic usage.

Periphrastic past: vaig parlar

ell/ella/vostèvava parlar
nosaltresvam / vàremvam parlar / vàrem parlar
vosaltresvau / vàreuvau parlar / vàreu parlar
ells/elles/vostèsvanvan parlar

The same auxiliary works with every verb: vaig tenir, vas sortir, va escriure, vam fer. Negation and clitics go before the auxiliary: no ho vaig veure; ens hi vam quedar.

Simple past: literary and regional forms

Recognition matters before production. In a novel, entrà, mirà i digué corresponds to everyday va entrar, va mirar i va dir.

The three-way vaig diagnostic

FormStructureMeaning
Vaig a Barcelona.present anar + placeI go / I’m going to Barcelona.
Vaig parlar amb ella.past auxiliary + bare infinitiveI spoke to her.
Vaig a parlar amb ella.present anar + a + infinitiveI’m going to speak to her / I’m about to speak to her.

The presence of a before the infinitive is decisive. A bare infinitive after vaig/vas/va/vam/vau/van is past.

Where he parlat fits

The perfet (he parlat) links a past event to a time frame understood as current: Avui he parlat amb la directora. The periphrastic past places the event in a completed frame: Ahir vaig parlar amb la directora. In Barcelona this today/yesterday contrast is productive, though speakers and regions vary.

Time expressions

Completed frames strongly favor the periphrastic or simple past: ahir, abans-d’ahir, l’any passat, fa dos anys, el 2019, aquell dia. Current frames favor the perfect: avui, aquesta setmana, aquest any, fins ara, ja, encara no.
