Literary tenses and narrative sequencing

He parlat, vaig parlar, parlí, background, flashback, projection, and viewpoint.

Catalan narrative has three competing ways to locate a completed event

He parlat is a perfect linked to a current frame; vaig parlar is the ordinary completed past across most modern speech and prose; parlí is the synthetic simple past, strongly associated with literary narration, formal historical prose, and regions where it remains productive. Good writers choose a narrative system deliberately and keep temporal relations coherent.

Ahir vaig parlar amb la directora.yesterday is a closed frame

The simple and periphrastic past are aspectually equivalent in most contexts. Alternating between them inside one neutral narrative without a stylistic reason sounds inconsistent.

Narrative viewpoint and free indirect style

A writer may maintain third person while adopting a character’s temporal viewpoint: L’endemà ho explicaria tot. Ara, però, havia de fugir. Adverbs such as ara can belong to the character’s “now”, while conditional marks their future. Control pronoun and deictic reference so the reader knows whose perspective governs aquí, aquell dia, l’endemà.
