The 500 most useful Catalan words

The core Catalan frequency list with English meanings, audio, and grammar notes.

What this band covers

The first 500 entries deliberately include the grammatical glue of Catalan plus at least 100 high-frequency verbs, 100 nouns, 50 adjectives, 50 adverbs, and essential numbers and time expressions. Conjugated forms such as és, vaig, and puc are retained when their independent frequency makes them worth recognizing instantly.

The ranking starts from the OpenSubtitles Catalan frequency corpus, then consolidates clitic fragments and inflected duplicates into learner-useful headwords. English meanings and grammatical labels are cross-checked against DACCO. From rank 501 onward, words are frequency-ranked within practical learning domains so the list remains teachable rather than becoming a raw dump of names, spelling fragments, and duplicate verb forms.
