Pronunciation
The vowel system, stress, consonants, and Barcelona pronunciation.
The sound system in one minute
Catalan spelling is systematic, but it is not Spanish read aloud. Central Catalan—the model used in Barcelona—has seven stressed vowel qualities and often reduces unstressed a/e to a neutral vowel and unstressed o toward u. Start by hearing whole words; refine the detail as you progress.
Vowels
| Spelling | Typical sound | Barcelona example | Practical cue |
|---|---|---|---|
| a | /a/ when stressed; neutral when unstressed | casa | Stressed a resembles father; final a is relaxed. |
| e | open /ɛ/, close /e/, or neutral unstressed | bé · set · pare | Accent marks distinguish é and è when written. |
| i | /i/ | nit | Like machine, but shorter. |
| o | open /ɔ/, close /o/, often [u] unstressed | bo · cosa | ó is close; ò is open. |
| u | /u/ | tu | Like food, short and pure. |
Consonants that deserve attention
- ll is the palatal sound in lloc, similar to the middle of “million”, not English l + l.
- ny in Catalunya is the sound in “canyon”.
- ç and soft c are /s/: plaça, ciutat.
- j and soft g are the voiced sound in French jour: jo, gent.
- x can be “sh” in xocolata, /ks/ in taxi, or /gz/ in learned words.
- Final consonants are often devoiced: the final sound of fred is [t], even though related freda reveals d.
Stress and accents
Without a written accent, words ending in a vowel, vowel + s, -en, or -in normally stress the penultimate syllable; most other endings stress the last syllable. Written accents override the default: cafè, també, música. A diaeresis shows that a vowel is pronounced separately or that u is sounded: raïm, pingüí.
