Past subjunctive and counterfactuals

Hagués parlat, third conditionals, mixed conditions, and earlier completed subordinate actions.

The pluperfect subjunctive marks an unreal, doubted, or evaluated action earlier than another past point

Build it with the imperfect subjunctive of haver plus an invariable past participle: hagués parlat. It appears after past triggers when the subordinate event is already complete and in counterfactual conditions that can no longer be fulfilled.

Complete formation

PersonhaverWith parlar
johaguéshagués parlat
tuhaguessishaguessis parlat
ell/ella/vostèhaguéshagués parlat
nosaltreshaguéssimhaguéssim parlat
vosaltreshaguéssiuhaguéssiu parlat
ells/elles/vostèshaguessinhaguessin parlat

The participle does not agree with the subject: elles haguessin arribat. With object clitics, agreement may appear in some formal or dialectal patterns, but invariant participles are the safe productive model.

Past trigger plus earlier subordinate event

Compare simultaneous/later Em va sorprendre que vingués with earlier completed Em va sorprendre que hagués vingut. The main clause is past in both; the compound form explicitly places the arrival before the surprise.

Third conditional: an impossible past

ClauseFormExample
conditionsi + pluperfect subjunctiveSi ho hagués sabut...
resultconditional perfect...hauria vingut.

Never put the conditional perfect inside the si clause in standard Catalan. The condition takes subjunctive; the consequence takes conditional.

Mixed conditionals

A past condition can have a present result: Si hagués acceptat aquella feina, ara viuria a Brussel·les. A present enduring condition can explain a past result: Si fos més previsor, no hauria perdut el tren. The tense pairing follows real chronology, not a memorized label.
