Ser vs estar
Identity, state, result, stay, and the Catalan-specific rules for location.
Catalan does not copy the Spanish split exactly
Ser presents identity, classification, defining qualities, time, material, origin, and event location. Estar presents a state, result, posture, or stay viewed over a span. For physical location, traditional standard Catalan uses ser more widely than Spanish; modern colloquial usage varies.

Location: place is not a universal estar rule
For an event, use ser without hesitation: El concert és al Palau Sant Jordi. For people and objects, La Marta és a casa; el banc és al final del carrer are established standard Catalan. Estar adds duration, maintained presence, position, or condition: La Marta estarà a casa tota la tarda; el gat està sota el llit. In Barcelona colloquial speech you will also hear estar extended to ordinary location, but learners should recognize the semantic distinction.
